Agamemnon, Aeschylus' opera
Directed by Davide Livermore
Greek Teather, Siracusa May 17 - July 5
The play opens the Oresteia
trilogy. In the palace of Argos, a system of fires warns that Troy
has been taken. Agamemnon's return is anxiously awaited, preceded by
a herald who narrates the travails of the war and the arduous return.
Clytemnestra has long been preparing the murder of her husband, who
had sacrificed her first-born daughter. Agamemnon enters the scene
bringing with him the concubine Cassandra, who prophesies the
imminent regicide without being believed. She is slaughtered along
with the king by Clytemnestra who takes power alongside her lover
Aegisthus.
