Edipo Re, a play by Sofocles
Directed by Robert Carsen
Greek Teather, Siracusa May 18 - July 3
Oedipus, the stranger who had defeated the Sphinx ten years earlier,
reigns in Thebes, husband of Jocasta and father of four children. Led
by a priest, his subjects ask him for help against the plague
ravaging the city. At first Oedipus searches for the cause indicated
by the oracle, the murderer of the previous king, Laius, then his
search becomes a search for his own identity, which a messenger
reveals to him is different from what he believed. A
cross-examination finally leads to the truth. Oedipus is the son of
Laius, he unknowingly killed his father, married his mother and
fathered four sons-brothers.
