The plot of the opera is simple: in order to raise his social status, the rich Bolognese merchant Geronimo wants to give his daughter Elisetta in marriage to a nobleman. Little does he know that his youngest daughter, Carolina, has already secretly married Geronimo's worker Paolino. The two have kept their marriage a secret because of their social differences. Count Robinson is willing to marry Elisetta, but changes his mind when he sees Carolina and falls in love with her. This leads to one misunderstanding after another, while the young girl's aunt, Fidalma, complicates matters further, as she has decided to marry Paolino. The chaos is complete, the young married couple decide to elope, but the two are caught; they eventually have to confess their marriage. The Count is moved by Carolina's sincerity, Geronimo relents and gives his blessing to the newlyweds, and everything settles down to the longed-for happy ending.
