Roberto Devereux
Gaetano Donizetti, Opera in three acts

Roberto Devereux is an opera in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti to a libretto by Salvadore Cammarano, based on Jacques-François Ancelot's tragedy Elisabeth d'Angleterre.
Together with Anna Bolena and Maria Stuarda, it is part of Donizetti's so-called 'Cycle of Tudor Queens'.
In the role of Elisabeth, singers such as Montserrat Caballé, Leyla Gencer, Beverly Sills, Edita Gruberová, Raina Kabaivanska and Mariella Devia have tried their hand.
The story is inspired by the relationship between Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex and Queen Elizabeth I of England, albeit with obvious licences (e.g. Elizabeth's final abdication, which never took place in reality).
