Genoa 14th century. The plebeian Simon Boccanegra loves Maria and has a daughter by her, but the woman dies and the little girl disappears. Simon is elected doge of Genoa thanks to the manoeuvres of Paolo. The daughter reappears 25 years later under the name Amelia. The woman is loved by the patrician Gabriele Adorno.
The doge would like to give her in marriage to Paolo, but when he learns of her identity, he cancels the wedding.
Paolo therefore meditates revenge, having in mind the abduction of Amelia.
In the meantime, Adorno is arrested and Paolo leads him to believe in an impure bond between Amelia and her father.
Boccanegra is then poisoned by Paolo, but before he dies he is in time to recognise Adorno's innocence and blesses his marriage to his daughter.
Paolo is banished from Genoa and Gabriele is the new doge.
